Individuals with Disabilities to Dive with the Whale Sharks


As the culmination of a six-month long project coordinated by Atlanta youth Zachary Bernstein, three young people with disabilities will be scuba diving with the whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium. This will take place during Zack’s bar mitzvah party which will be held at the Aquarium on February 18th. As a service project, Zack who is 13, has been raising awareness and funds to benefit Diveheart. Diveheart is a not-for-profit organization that provides scuba diving for children, adults and veterans with physical and cognitive disabilities.


Zachary decided that Diveheart would be the beneficiary because of his interest in scuba diving, and his compassion for individuals with disabilities. “I wanted to do this because I love to Scuba dive and I think it is awesome that kids and adults with disabilities can love diving as much as I do. They also get the added benefit of being free from their disability while they are diving. It’s cool,” said Zachary. Last August, Zachary worked with SeaVentures which hosted Diveheart for a fundraising event.


“I was completely amazed when I heard about this young man’s plans to support our organization,” said Jim Elliott, president/founder of Diveheart. “We love it when young people are inspired by Diveheart and the impact that we have on peoples’ lives, and we’re in turn inspired when they are motivated to give back in the way that Zack is doing.”


Elliott decided to bring three divers to the Aquarium to help celebrate the auspicious event and to demonstrate the amazing transformation that individuals with disabilities experience underwater. The participants will include a young lady with physical disabilities and two young men including a Marine veteran, who have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
